The freight rail that built the city still threads through downtown; the brick warehouses it left behind now hold restaurants, breweries, and a Saturday market that has been running, uninterrupted, since 1882. Above all of it sits the world's largest free-standing illuminated star — eighty-eight feet tall, visible for sixty miles on a clear night.

The Star
The world's largest free-standing illuminated star, standing 88 feet atop Mill Mountain. A meticulously landscaped city park surrounds it, with hiking trails, biking paths, and a small zoo. Drive up at sunset; stay for the city lights.

Locomotives
The historic freight station, now a museum, holds antique automobiles and trucks, electric and diesel locomotives, and vintage steam vehicles. The 611 — a working Class J — still runs excursions a few weekends a year.

Home of DIY Network's Salvage Dawgs. Two warehouses of architectural salvage, vintage house parts, upcycled designs, garden statuary, and inspired furniture. Built for a long, slow browse.

Taubman
The largest art museum in southwestern Virginia and the region's premier destination for world-class arts and culture. The Randall Stout building — all angled glass — is worth the visit by itself.

Downtown
A seven-story non-profit housing ten cultural organizations, plus an 8,000-gallon living-reef aquarium with 400+ marine fish and 150 corals — the largest of its kind in the mid-Atlantic.

Carvins Cove
A 12,700-acre reserve — one of the largest municipal parks in the United States. Cove, forest, and miles of trails for hikers and mountain bikers alike. Bring water; bring a sandwich.

Greenway
More than 400 miles of paved and natural-surface trails — for a leisurely walk along a waterway, a bike to work, or training for a race. The Roanoke River Greenway threads the whole valley.

The Lake
Virginia's second-largest lake, about a 45-minute drive southeast. Twenty thousand acres of water for boating, swimming, and lakeside lunches — plus a state park and a handful of wineries on the way.
An afternoon on the Parkway, markets in Salem, a stretch of the Appalachian Trail, kayaks on the Upper James, sunset at Smith Mountain Lake. Over a thousand miles of trail surround this valley — a day is a fair starting point.
